CUSCO, PERU - On Saturday, October 5, the Really Living Mission Team touched down in Cusco, Peru — once the vibrant capital of the Inca Empire and now a popular tourist destination. But the team wasn’t there for sightseeing. Their mission was deeper: to return to a country that had left a lasting mark on their hearts, and to complete the work that a global pandemic had put on hold.
The team’s first mission trip to Peru was in 2016, when they helped upgrade a school in the remote village of Velille. Deeply moved by the experience, they planned two return visits for April and October of 2020. But like so many global efforts, these plans were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, in October 2024, with prayer and persistence, the Really Living team was finally able to return — this time partnering with ADRA Peru to serve once more.
Upon arrival, the team journeyed to the remote community of Labraco. Nestled high in the Andes — nearly 4,000 metres above sea level — this isolated region endures harsh conditions, with temperatures that can drop to -20°C. The Peruvian government provides little to no support to communities like Labraco, often referred to as “the forgotten people.”
Despite the cold, the team was warmly welcomed by the villagers. This year’s project focused on upgrading family homes to improve health and quality of life. Dividing into small work groups, team members began installing essential features including flooring, clean-burning stoves, and basic bathrooms.
Alongside the construction team, a dental team also served the community. They provided check-ups, cleanings, and oral hygiene education — particularly for children, who eagerly embraced the opportunity to learn and care for their teeth. In total, the dental team cared for 77 patients and provided:
46 fillings
16 extractions
63 sealants
25 fluoride treatments
45 applications of silver diamine fluoride (SDF)
27 cleanings
Once the home upgrades were completed, the team visited a local school, distributing toys and school supplies. The children’s gratitude was clear in their smiles and words. One student, Jordan, stood to speak on behalf of his peers:
“Good morning to everybody! My name is Jordan and I study at this school. On behalf of all the children who study here, we are so grateful for all the supplies you have given us. Thank you also for helping us with our teeth. As you can see, we have a lot of need — so thank you so much for being here!”
The final Sabbath with the community was a deeply emotional one. During a heartfelt celebration, the villagers unveiled a handmade sign painted with the words:
“Gracias ADRA – El Pueblo Olvidado”
“Thank You ADRA – The Forgotten People”
The Really Living Mission Team returned home transformed, but their work continues in spirit through ADRA Peru. We invite you to keep ADRA in your prayers as they continue to share the love and kindness of Jesus in places the world too often forgets.
