and you gave me something to eat

Since January 2014, Serving Hands has been providing a hot and tasty meal to residents of downtown Hamilton twice each month. As available, volunteers also provide donated grocery items, pet food, and personal care items. A friendly smile, a word of encouragement, and a listening ear are always on the menu!

Corporate sponsors of this program, who generously share food and resources, include Fortinos (Upper James location), Ippolito, and Goodness Me (Upper Gage location).

Want to get involved?

  • prepare food in your own home, including chili, pasta, salad, etc.
  • pick up donated food from suppliers
  • sort and bag donated food/items
  • assist in serving food downtown
  • clean up equipment after serving

We welcome committed volunteers who…

  • show sensitivity to the feelings and needs of people experiencing poverty, addictions, and homelessness through empathetic speech and conduct,
  • have basic cooking skills, and
  • have their own transportation
  • 2–4 hours once/month for food prep during the week prior to serving
  • Thurs or Fri pickup of salad from Ipolito and Sat morning pickup of bread from Fortinos once/month
  • 4–6+ hours one Saturday afternoon-evening/month for serving and clean-up
